About Us

The Counterparts are mixed voice a cappella singers with voice ranges including Sopranos, First Altos, Second Altos, Tenors, and Basses. We rehearse for two hours every Monday night and perform a cappella music throughout the Greater Philadelphia region for parties large and small.  Repertoire includes a range from American standards to contemporary songs in a jazz style ensemble.

The Counterparts were formed in 1960 as successors to a group called "The Roaring Twenty" which in turn went back to "The Music Crafters" who put on Broadway Musicals in the 1950's. In the early days, many of its members came from The Savoy Company, Philadelphia's notable Gilbert and Sullivan group. Our big annual event, Spring Sing, is a formal annual gathering of eleven a cappella groups based across the country. Starting in 1957, it has been hosted by each member group in rotation. The Counterparts are the senior group still participating, having first performed as "The Roaring Twenty" in 1962. If you'd like to learn more about Spring Sing, take a look at the AACA website linked below.

The Counterparts are happy to be a member organization with Join Philly as of 2026. Join Philly is a civic platform that helps Philadelphians find real-world community through clubs, gatherings, and creative participation. You can learn more about Counterparts' involvement and Join Philly at the website linked below.
